The Gockle 5K Run/Walk was established to honor the memory and heart of a young man, Johnny Hohman, who went to be with the Lord in 2007. Persevering through years of kidney dialysis, Johnny never gave up and inspired his family, friends and youth group to "run for the prize" of living an overcoming life. His heart was to see the youth of this generation look beyond themselves and bring hope and love to the hurting and lost.
The vision of the Run is to bring together not only the youth of New Life Christian Fellowship and Providence School, but of Jacksonville, as a place where they can raise funds for those times when they reach out in ways to show compassion to our community and the nations of this world.
The Run/Walk is open to participants of all ages and includes a free, one-mile "Fun Run" for children under the age of 12. Awards are given to the top male and female runners in each age category as well as the overall top male and female runners and Fun Run top three winners. All events are held on the campus of Providence School and New Life Christian Fellowship.
The Gockle 5K Run/Walk is unique among Jacksonville racing events. The course is almost entirely cross-country and winds through wooded areas and around a lake on the campus of New Life Christian Fellowship and Providence School. The course is well marked and mostly flat, ensuring excellent racing times. The one-mile fun run begins and ends on one of the practice fields.
